INAUGURAL STYLE
UNITY IN PURPLE, STRENGTH AND SISTERHOOD IN PEARLS 💪🏼

Always a moment for sartorial symbolism, yesterday's inauguration day was a breath of fresh air that didn't disappoint.  Kamala Harris wore purple - a combination of red and blue and a symbol of unity, a color of women's suffrage, and a nod to Shirley Chisholm - the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, who has inspired Harris' career and campaigns.

PEARLS, GIRLS!

Often representing power and authority, pearls have famously been worn by women such as Jackie Kennedy, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi.

For Madame Vice President Kamala Harris, they have a particularly symbolic meaning as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Howard University.  The founders of the sorority are known as the "Twenty Pearls", with initiates of the sorority receiving a badge covered with twenty pearls.

Because of this, VP Harris is almost always seen wearing pearls - a token of sisterhood and female solidarity.
